Brenda Roshell Smith

Brenda Roshell Smith, 65, of Portage, IN (formerly of South Bend, IN) passed away on Tuesday March 21, 2023 at Elkhart General Hospital.

Brenda was born on July 1, 1957 in Gary, IN to the late Arnell and Vivian Montgomery. Brenda married DeWarren Smith Jr. on February 21, 1976 and spent 39 years together before his passing in 2015. Together they had two children: Sajata Peck of Portage, IN and Carmen Smith of South Bend, IN.

Brenda symbolized her dedication to Jehovah God on October 7, 1973 and spent many years educating people about the Bible in the full-time ministry. As her health declined and she could no longer participate in the full-time ministry, she never stopped talking about her love and zeal for the truth. Brenda retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation as a school secretary. Brenda is best known for her story telling, cooking delicious meals, keeping a well decorated home and a flare for her fashion and makeup.

Left to cherish Brenda’s memory are her daughters; Sajata (Brian) Peck and Carmen Smith, her grandchildren Bryson Peck, Kiya Jackson, Brian Jennings, and Adrianna Jennings, 2 great grandchildren, her sister Diana Whitt of Gary, her brothers Matthew Johnson, Donald Johnson, Kerry (Debbie) Montgomery, and Arnell Montgomery Jr.; all of Elkhart.  Also surviving are her special spiritual sisters; Denise (Clint) Smith, Patricia West, and Misheal Wicker; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Brenda was preceded in death by her beloved husband DeWarren Smith Jr., her parents; Arnell and Vivian Montgomery, her sister Anita Montgomery, her brothers Terrence Montgomery, Ronald (Stella)  Johnson, and her brother-in-law Aubrey Whitt. 

A memorial service for Brenda will be held at 1pm EST on Saturday April 1, 2023 at the Chain-O-Lakes Cong., Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses; 26807 US Hwy 20 South Bend, IN.
